The Little Mermaid Book Cover

This is a re-design project of an old literature book cover in Illustration for Graphic Design Class. The Little Mermaid book I’m working on is not from Disney but by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. The story was written back in 1837 as part of the Danish fairy tale. I wanted to work on this book because I enjoy reading the many versions of the little mermaid whether it ends in tragedy or happiness. In this story, I want to show the prince and the mermaid’s first interaction, and the sadness of love and longing the mermaid has for the prince.

There were many ideas that I brainstorm about. To convey the mermaid’s longing and love for the prince, I show the mermaid’s expression looking up to the surface. The scene where the mermaid rescues the prince gives a glimpse of the story. The transparent tale showing a pair of feet foreshadow the mermaid will have legs later on in the story. The fonts I use are SavoyeLetPlain for the title and SinhalaMN for the summary and author name.
